At Fort Worth Strong, we seek to provide life changing results to clients. We believe having a trainer and a community of support is the best way to create sustainable change.
If you read our previous blog, I discussed why I opened a gym in the first place. Specifically, a coaching gym. We may be smaller in size but we’re more targeted in our offering and what we are able to provide our customers.
Many gyms provide some level of instruction. Personal trainers are typically not too hard to find, especially online.
Good personal trainers and coaches are more rare.
I believe there are 4 must have skills that make a trainer a “good” trainer.
- Foundation. These are the “hard” skills like education and more importantly experience. Social proof matters. Is this trainer actually helping clients achieve results?
- Organization. Training requires a level of managing people, schedules, and thier programs. A sign of professionalism is a trainer’s ability to reduce or remove confusion and provide a consistent client experience.
- Attitude. These are the “soft” skills. Personality, in many cases is more powerful than a deep education. You need to know that the trainer has your best interest and can empathize with your needs.
- Example. It is safe to say it’s wise to take advice from someone who is actively pursuing thier own personal health and fitness goals. You want your trainer to walk the walk and have personal experience with the guidance you are seeking.
I hope this provides some context for you if you’re currently looking to work with a trainer.
We seek to attract good trainers but often times we will target good people that are hungry to learn and grow, that are actively pursuing thier own goals, but may lack the experience.
So, what is our real differentiator?
Fort Worth Strong’s vision is to have a reputation of having Exceptional trainers.
This is how we elevate trainers in our gym. Interest>Good>Great>Exceptional
- Core Values. Our culture is rooted in 4 core values that act as our tools to navigate our actions and decision making. It results in unity and a consistent product for our customers.
- “Service First”: Written in our mission, our main objective is to serve our community one member at a time. Why we do what we do.
- “Radiate Positivity”: Control what you can control. Enthusiasm and kindness are contagious.
- “Turn Pro”: Unyeilding effort to exceed expectations. How you do anything is how you do everything.
- “Pursuit of Excellence”: We always do our job to the best of our ability and encourage our members to do the same. We are lifelong learners.
- Development. There are stages to growth in our system. We want to see our trainers first demonstrate a high level of competence in the fundamentals. Then, through ongoing mentorship we determine the specialties and interests of our trainers. We set goals just like we do with our clients and provide a plan and accountability for continued development.
- Environment. We’ve operated for 5 years now. The staff culture has been nurtured enough that a standard has been set. Our more senior trainers set a great example and they’re able to provide additional tools and support for newer trainers. This creates a second level of ascension.
- Reps. Spending time week after week – learning, applying, assessing, and reevaluting leads to mastery. Earning a level of autonomy increases our capacity to perform our roles at a higher level and acquire new skills.
