Training After Retirement: Mark’s Strength And Weight Loss Journey At Fort Worth Strong

Training for the Next Generation: Mark’s Commitment to a Stronger Retirement

Mark had spent much of his career as a corporate executive, traveling around the world and focusing on nearly everything except his own physical health.

Retirement changed his perspective.

He had been fortunate to remain relatively healthy, but looking at family photos made him think differently about what he wanted the next stage of his life to look like.

“I set a goal to dance at my 10 grandchildren’s weddings.”

That goal became bigger than losing weight or looking better. Mark wanted to remain physically capable enough to enjoy his family, his retirement, and the years ahead.

Before moving to Fort Worth, he had already spent about six months working with a trainer at a bodybuilding-focused gym. He became stronger and added size, but his weight wasn’t changing and he felt like an important part of the equation was missing.

When he moved to Fort Worth, he saw an opportunity to start fresh.

That’s when he began personal training with Coach Matt at Fort Worth Strong.

Starting Point

Mark was already working hard in the gym before moving to Fort Worth.

The problem was that the results didn’t match the effort.

“I got bigger, but I didn’t lose any weight.”

His previous training focused primarily on lifting and strength. What he felt was missing was a broader strategy that included nutrition, lifestyle habits, and accountability.

“I was frustrated that I was working hard, but not losing weight.”

There was also a deeper motivation behind wanting to change his physical health.

“My goals are to dance at my grandchildren’s weddings, but in the meantime, to be able to enjoy life safely, improve my physical appearance, and become proud of myself when I look at myself.”

Mark wasn’t simply training for today’s workout.

He was training for the life he wanted to be capable of living years from now.

What We Focused On

At Fort Worth Strong, the training itself remained important, but it became one part of a more complete approach.

Coach Matt worked with Mark on:

  • Progressive strength training
  • Maintaining muscle while losing weight
  • Protein and carbohydrate intake
  • Sustainable nutrition habits
  • Accountability
  • Adapting training around physical limitations
  • Building habits that supported long-term health

“I appreciate how he includes diet and constantly reminds me to balance my protein and carbohydrate needs.”

That combination helped connect what Mark was doing inside the gym with what he was doing throughout the rest of his week.

Instead of simply working harder, the goal became making all of those efforts work together.

Staying Consistent Through Surgery

One of the biggest tests came when Mark needed hand surgery.

With arthritic hands already making certain exercises difficult, surgery could have easily become a reason to stop training altogether.

Instead, Coach Matt adjusted the plan.

“When I mentioned I was having hand surgery, he quickly came up with an alternative exercise plan.”

The goal was to protect the recovering hand while keeping Mark active and continuing to train everything that could be trained appropriately.

“That was a lifesaver, helping me stay active, build strength, and protect the hand where I had surgery.”

Rather than allowing one limitation to derail the entire process, the program changed with him.

That adaptability helped Mark continue progressing through a period when it would have been easy to lose momentum.

Changing His Approach to Nutrition

One of the biggest differences between Mark’s previous training experience and his experience at Fort Worth Strong has been nutrition.

“Healthy eating has become a lifestyle for me.”

Instead of treating nutrition as a temporary diet, he began changing the way he ate on a daily basis while still allowing room for occasional treats.

Protein became especially important.

As part of a physician-managed GLP-1 program, Mark and Coach Matt have paid close attention to supporting his training and maintaining adequate nutrition while he loses weight.

One of the biggest challenges has been simply eating enough protein.

“Sometimes, I feel like I can’t eat enough.”

Adding a protein shake helped him consistently meet those needs.

The result has been especially meaningful to Mark:

“It’s amazing that I’ve maintained muscle mass while losing a significant amount of weight.”

The Results

Mark’s progress shows up in far more than the number on the scale.

“I’m stronger, my clothes don’t fit anymore, I sleep better, I’m happier, I’m more positive, and I’m constantly energized.”

The physical changes have been significant enough that there’s also one unexpected consequence:

“I’m about to become poorer because I need a new wardrobe!”

But underneath the humor is a much more important transformation.

Mark originally wanted to lose weight and improve his appearance.

What he gained was a lifestyle that makes him feel better.

More energy.

Better sleep.

Greater strength.

More confidence.

And a clearer understanding of how training and nutrition work together.

For someone who began this process because he wanted to feel proud of himself and remain active for his family, those changes represent much more than a physical transformation.

Accountability That Goes Beyond the Workout

Mark knew from the beginning that accountability was something he needed.

“I needed to find a gym where I could work with a trainer who would help me hold myself accountable to the goals I set for myself.”

Coach Matt provides that accountability, but Mark still owns the goal.

That distinction has been important.

Personal training provides the structure, coaching, and honest feedback, while Mark continues to make the daily choices necessary to support what he’s working toward.

“I’ve really valued the honest encouragement Coach Matty gives me.”

That combination has helped turn his original retirement goal into a sustainable routine.

Finding the Right Gym Environment

Like anything new, Mark says becoming part of a gym community took some time.

But as he continued showing up, relationships developed naturally.

“As time has gone by, I’ve found the gym to be a very friendly place.”

He appreciates being surrounded by people who are there with purpose.

“Everyone is there for a reason, and everyone seems to be motivated.”

The coaching environment has stood out as well.

“The coaching staff is dedicated to their customers, and that’s very apparent.”

For Mark, that combination of individual coaching and a motivated community has made Fort Worth Strong a place where he wants to continue showing up.

Training for a Longer, More Capable Life

Mark’s original goal remains one of the best summaries of why he trains:

“I set a goal to dance at my 10 grandchildren’s weddings.”

It’s a specific goal, but it represents something much larger.

He wants to be present.

He wants to be capable.

He wants to enjoy his retirement rather than simply experience it.

And he wants to feel proud of the person he sees standing beside his children and grandchildren in those future family photos.

Strength training is helping him prepare for those moments now.

Advice for Someone Thinking About Starting

Mark’s advice is simple:

“Just go for it—you won’t regret it!”

He understands that personal training is an investment, but he encourages people to consider the bigger picture.

“Having a personal trainer can really help keep you on track.”

For someone who spent years prioritizing his career before finally prioritizing his physical health, he now sees that investment differently.

“You can do it.”
