Rebuilding Strength After Injury: Christina’s Shoulder Recovery Journey

When Christina first came to Fort Worth Strong, her priority was shoulder recovery.

After suffering a torn rotator cuff and bicep tendon, she went through surgery and physical therapy before being cleared to return to exercise. Like many people in her position, the next step wasn’t just “getting back into the gym”, it was finding the right coaching to rebuild strength and range of motion safely.

That’s when she began personal training with Coach Matt, training twice per week with a clear goal: restore function, rebuild confidence, and move without pain.

Starting Point

Christina came in after completing physical therapy, but like many clients, she was still in that transition phase, cleared to exercise, but not fully confident in what her body could handle.

The shoulder is one of the most complex joints in the body. It has the greatest range of motion, which also makes it one of the most vulnerable when strength and mobility aren’t balanced.

Before progressing into strength work, we needed to understand exactly what her shoulder could tolerate.

What we focused on

The first step was building a baseline through movement assessments.

This allowed us to evaluate:

  • Shoulder mobility
  • Stability and strength through different ranges of motion
  • Pain or restriction points
  • Overall movement quality

Coach Matt describes the progression:

“Once we started seeing progress with light band work and simple, low-impact bodyweight movements, I gradually increased the tension and introduced free weights. Not only can Christina move her arm more freely now, but she’s become confident loading her shoulder through a variety of ranges of motion.”

The program emphasized:

  • Controlled, progressive strength training
  • Light resistance bands to rebuild activation
  • Gradual introduction of load
  • Stability and control through full ranges of motion
  • Building trust in her ability alongside physical progress

The results

In just one month, Christina made significant progress.

Training after an injury often comes with hesitation. The fear of reinjury can limit progress just as much as the physical limitation itself. By progressing gradually and intentionally, she was able to rebuild trust in her body.

Today, she can:

  • Move her arm more freely
  • Handle resistance with confidence
  • Train through a wider range of motion
  • Continue progressing toward long-term strength goals

For many people looking for personal training in Fort Worth, this is a critical phase, bridging the gap between rehab and real strength training.

Why this matters

Training through an injury, especially something as complex as a rotator cuff tear, requires more than just generic workouts.

It requires:

  • Assessment-driven programming
  • Controlled progression
  • Attention to movement quality
  • Coaching that prioritizes long-term health over short-term intensity

Christina’s progress is a strong example of what’s possible when strength training is approached the right way.
