Rebuilding Strength and Confidence at 60: Melissa’s Personal Training Experience

Rebuilding Strength, Confidence, and an Active Life at 60

When Melissa first came to Fort Worth Strong, starting a strength training program felt intimidating.

She had recently completed a seven-week pain management program while dealing with several chronic pain and spine-related diagnoses. Her physical therapist suggested that strength training could be an appropriate next step, but Melissa still had doubts.

“I was hesitant. I was worried I would hurt myself. I didn’t feel strong enough.”

Her goals were not about chasing a number on the scale.

She wanted to regain strength, improve flexibility, become more active, and most importantly, stop letting fear determine what she believed her body could do.

That led her to personal training at Fort Worth Strong.

Starting Point

Before beginning personal training, Melissa’s biggest barriers were pain and fear.

“There were days I could barely walk. I had to really push myself every day.”

She had already spent significant time working through pain management and physical therapy, but the next step still felt uncertain.

“When I met Kyleigh, I told her I wasn’t sure I would be able to complete a training session.”

That uncertainty became the starting point.

Rather than pushing immediately toward intensity, the focus was on building trust, developing confidence, and creating a training approach that Melissa felt comfortable progressing through.

What We Focused On

For Melissa, patience became one of the most important parts of the process.

“Patience and educating helped me the most.”

Instead of measuring success only by weight loss or workout performance, Coach Kyleigh helped her recognize improvements in how her body moved, felt, and functioned.

“Accepting this was going to take time and it wasn’t so much about the numbers on the scale. It was about the improvements in my body.”

Some days were naturally better than others.

When a session felt difficult or Melissa became discouraged, Kyleigh helped put that day into perspective.

“Days I couldn’t finish or felt weak, my trainer reminded me how far I’ve come and motivated me.”

That mindset helped turn training from a short-term project into a lifestyle change.

Changing the Way She Thinks About Food and Activity

One of the biggest transformations happened outside the gym.

Melissa began viewing food and daily movement differently.

“I see food as fuel.”

She started eating out less, became more aware of portion sizes, and built more structure around what she ate.

At the same time, she dramatically increased her overall activity.

Her routine now includes:

  • Strength training
  • Walking
  • Stretching
  • Physical therapy exercises
  • Movement spread throughout the day

Instead of relying on one workout to “fix” everything, she began treating movement as something woven into daily life.

“If I don’t do this, I will be back where I was a year ago. I can’t go backwards.”

That commitment has become one of the strongest drivers of her consistency.

The Results

Melissa describes the changes as major.

She has lost weight, reduced body fat, and seen visible changes throughout her body.

But the most meaningful results have gone far beyond appearance.

“Most important, I’m off my pain meds.”

That outcome is part of a much larger picture for her: becoming more active, more confident, and more willing to trust her body again.

She knows the process has not been easy.

“Has not been easy, but so worth it.”

For many adults looking for personal training in Fort Worth, this kind of progress is a reminder that success does not always mean doing more.

Sometimes it means gradually reclaiming activities, confidence, and independence that once felt out of reach.

Learning How to Respond to Difficult Days

Melissa still experiences occasional pain.

The difference now is how she responds to it.

“Only struggle was when I had pain.”

Rather than allowing a difficult day to derail the entire process, she learned to adjust.

She would focus on the affected area, use strategies recommended to her such as heat or physical therapy, take a short period of rest when needed, and then gradually return to activity.

“During this process there were more good days than bad days.”

That perspective helped reinforce an important lesson:

Progress does not require every day to be perfect.

It requires continuing to move forward.

Finding the Right Environment

Melissa was intentional about finding a gym where she felt comfortable.

“I searched for the perfect gym. It had to be basic.”

From the first time she walked into Fort Worth Strong, the environment felt different.

She appreciated the smaller setting and the sense that family members and support systems were welcome.

“There’s a woman who brings her mom and baby to her workouts, and it makes me happy every time.”

For Melissa, those small details mattered.

“The idea that you are so open to family support, the environment felt right.”

That comfort helped remove another barrier that could have prevented her from staying consistent.

Advice for Someone Thinking About Starting

Melissa believes personal training requires real commitment.

“You are about to put your time, money, heart and soul into changing everything.”

But she also believes the investment has been completely worth it.

Her lifestyle has changed.

She spends less time watching television.

She moves more.

Her attitude toward exercise has changed.

And instead of dreading workouts, she now looks forward to them because she knows how much better she feels afterward.

“Best decision I ever made.”

And she credits Coach Kyleigh with playing a major role in helping her get there.

“Thank you to Kyleigh.”
